EU CBRN CoE Project 18 International Network of Universities and Institutes for Raising Awareness on Dual-Use Concerns in Biotechnology |
Project Factsheet
The geographical scope of the Project is international and includes the following CoE regions:
- African Atlantic Façade
- Middle East
- North Africa
- South East Asia
- South East Europe, Southern Caucasus, Moldova and Ukraine
Preliminary contacts have been also established in these CoE regions:
- Central Asia
- Eastern and Central Africa
- Gulf Cooperation Council
Given the international scope, it is envisaged that new actors and countries engaged by the Network throughout the two years (giving priority to CoE existing and potential partners countries and regions), will be given access to the educational materials of the Web Platform, will be regularly updated on the progress and results of the Project, and may be invited to some of the initiatives organized by the Consortium.
Here is a brief excursus of the main activities that will be carried out throughout the following months, until December 2014:
Identification of Stakeholders
Identification the main national Stakeholders in the field of biosafety, biosecurity and dual-use.
Gap, Needs & Situation Analysis
Realization of a survey among professors of the local universities, to gather information on the current level of awareness, the educational opportunities, and the attitude of scientists in this field.
Seminars
Organization of seminars addressed to students, focusing on different aspects of biosafety, biosecurity and dual-use, according to the local priorities.
Production of materials
Production of educational and training materials to be used during the seminars.
Organization and participation to regional and international activities of the Project:
- Strategic Meeting, held in March 2013 in Como, Italy;
- International Workshop, to be held around November 2014 in Como, Italy;
- Regional Working Meetings, to be held by Local Partners throughout 2014.
The Consortium of organizations working together on the implementation of Project 18 is very wide and is composed of 18 Partner Universities and Institutes in 14 countries. The members of the Consortium are faculties of Sciences and Bio-technology, but also Ecologists, Political Scientists, Lawyers, Philosophers, Bioethicists, Public Health agencies, Agriculture and Medicine faculties.
