The 3-day Regional Working Meeting was held at the Chelsea Function Room of the Kimberly Hotel, Manila, Philippines. It was attended by a total of 30 participants (8 international and 22 local), including representatives from Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos and Italy. Most of the local representatives were professors from the University of the Philippines; however, representatives from other research institutes and from the national security sector, such as the National Police School and Bureau of Fire Protection, were also invited.
The goal of this meeting was to: (1) Discuss the current understanding of dual use concerns in biotechnology within the region; (2) Develop core messages to raise awareness on dual use concerns in biotechnology; (3) Understand the links between dual use concerns in biotechnology and the broader concerns of public health security, and (4) Develop a plan for further action on dual use concerns in biotechnology at the national and regional level.
